Julia Smith-Rose

Julia studied at Winchester School of Art and the London College of Fashion, where she became the first recipient of the Unilever Bursary Award for her groundbreaking work in sustainability within fashion and textiles.

Bio

Julia’s innovative approach to design and pattern cutting in her MA Collection was featured in the following book by Sandy Black:

Julia then worked for Alberta Ferretti in Italy, designing for the ‘Philosophy by Alberta Ferretti’ line, with her creations featured in both the selling collections and Milan catwalk shows. Driven by her deep passion for sustainability, she left Italy to pursue an ethical fashion collaboration in Ghana, working with the women’s cooperative ‘Global Mamas’ to design a range of printed textiles and dresses for the UK high street giant, Topshop. She later launched her own ethical fashion brand, which sold in over 15 stores across the UK and internationally, alongside running a retail store in London’s prestigious Connaught Village.

Throughout her career, Julia’s work has been showcased in numerous publications, including Vogue, Marie Claire, Elle, Stylist, and Drapers. She has also exhibited at prestigious events such as Vauxhall Fashion Scout, Estethica at London Fashion Week, Pure London, and Prêt-à-Porter Paris, among others.

In recent years, Julia has focused on designing for the UK high street, with a core focus on innovation and sustainability. She has worked with leading retailers such as Marks & Spencer, Coast, Oasis, and Ireland’s Dunnes Stores.

Julia is deeply committed to sharing her knowledge and expertise with the next generation of designer-makers. Throughout her career, she has taught at prestigious institutions such as Morley College, Istituto Marangoni, and City of Westminster College. At her core, Julia is passionate about driving design innovation through sustainable practices in fashion and textiles, a pursuit she continues through both her research and professional work.
